An alleged drunk driver is facing serious consequences after a crash near El Paso resulted in the deaths of two teenagers and serious injury to a third.

Law enforcement authorities claim the 32-year-old man was driving outside his lane when he struck the two 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old. One teen had pulled over to the side of the road and the other two had stopped to offer him help. Law enforcement authorities said they believe speed and alcohol were factors in the purported drunk driving crash.

One teenager died at the scene and another died at University Medical Center. The third teenager is also at University Medical Center where he is improving.

The alleged drunk driver was also injured in the accident and authorities say he will be booked into El Paso County Jail once he is well enough to be released. The man is facing two warrants for intoxicated manslaughter.

It is, of course, a terrible tragedy that three young people were killed. However, there is a danger that people's grief over their deaths may cloud the circumstances of this accident. The man is entitled to his day in court, just like everyone else, and he has the right to enlist the help of an experienced defense attorney who will work vigorously to protect his rights. That court of public opinion of which people so often speak plays by different rules than the courts in our justice system and it is very important that people do not confuse the two.
